I used to use this theme a lot in 2005/2006. I'd say that this is one of the greatest themes of all time. If I can ever work out how, I'll try porting it to GTK3. It looks like it may be difficult, though. We'll see.

I have never used CDE for any real work, so there's no nostalgia. But I like the motif look. It's clean, simple, and somewhat retro. But then again, I liked rio, acme, and the rest of the plan9 UI. So, maybe I'm just weird. Plus, I just got two ultra 10's, and it just feels 'right' to use Motif on them.

I like the Solaris CDE theme. Made something similar for KDE so that my KDE looks like Solaris CDE. It's a no-bullshit, functional and classical look. To all other dudes: not everyone likes bouncing cursors, menu fading and transparency. Some people just do their work using computers.

That's a pretty cool theme, although I don't think I'd be using it it. I wrote a Solaris theme for MetaCity, maybe some people would like to check it out :)

Forgot to mention the name of the theme: SolarCity

Actually, I kinda like at. It does bring some memory when I used to do some programming under Solaris. Think will use this theme for a while... (I like the gtk2 theme, but not the border)

A tagline: "Make your desktop as ugly as it used to be." Seriously, though, why would I want to make GTK look like CDE? There's a reason Motif has fallen at the wayside.

Simple, because people who are stuck using solaris/CDE/Motif who also use GTK applications can have a consitent look to all their applications. I mean you could argue why anyone would want this for Gnome .. since all content on this site is supposed to relate to gnome. But then again I'd say that only applies to the minority of the content here.

Vann

That's a good point, I suppose. I guess I didn't realize people still used CDE. Are they still using Netscape 4, too? Anyways, fair point.

It doesn't have to be "beautiful". That's not the purpose of such themes. It's about making your desktop get the old-school feel while still using modern-day applications. I like such themes because it's "just like the movies" and it has some underground UNIX feeling to it. It's not that a user is stuck to this theme forever, once applied. For occasional usage it can be fun. I used the CDE Desktop from Sun for quite a while. It just brings back some memories.
