Description: Since Compiz 0.7.6, desktop deformations are possible: Sphere and Cylinder. I cut a cylindrical projection of the earth into pieces so that it fits on the four sides of the cube and the caps. Just unzip the file and use Compiz-Fusion's ccsm to put the files in the right places.
Edit 1: Many commenters don't know how to put four different wallpapers on four different sides of the cube. Here's a link to one of the methods:
My package doesn't contain an installer. Just untar/unzip it and put the files somewhere on your harddisk. Then, open up your Compiz configuration application (ccsm, probably) and point to the right images.
Edit 2: The image used isn't that detailed. If you find a better one, you can do the same trick with the GIMP. Just be sure it is a cylindrical projection (a rectangular (2:1) shot with huge poles). Then copy the top 25% into a new picture and do Filters>Distorts>Polar Coordinates. You might want to keep this open, because you need to rotate it to fit the middle parts. Now do the same for the bottom 25%. This gives you the cube caps.
When everything goes well, you're left with a 4:1 middle part. Just cut it into four equal pieces. Now you're stuck with square (1:1) desktop images, so you might also try to make desktop images with the right aspect ratio. This however results in bigger polar pieces and distorts the globe texture. Feel free to experiment and post me the right way to slice'em.Last changelog:
yeah it helped :-) but it was not the answer. After a few minutes of searching I found this webside:
http://www.humus.name/index.php?page=Textures&&start=32
here you can get better pics than these are. And a lot more of them :-)
(--> probably someone could update the package here)
I'm using Ubuntu 8.10:
I had only to insert the pics normal into the wallpaper plugin (example:/home/schnecki/Pictures/skydome/erde/4.jpg) ! Don't forget to change the postione value: Position = scaled!
At the "Cube Reflection and Deformation" plugin you need these behaviours:
*Adjust top/bottom image
*Scale top/bottom image
If you don't get any pics, do following (thx to jeangui):
*enter "gconf-editor" into the editor of your choice
*go to: apps --> nautilus --> preferences
*put out the cross of "show desktop"
*reboot
Hope I could help you ;-)

EarthDesktop is like god, in that, if it didn't exist, it'd have to be invented. ( A lil' Atheist humor. No offense intended to anyone)
I made my own version with political overtones. My first Linux artwork. Thanks for the source material and inspiration.

I love it! Works great on my Linux Mint (Elyssa). It took a little bit of work to get 7.6 and then to get it to work with Gnome 2 wasn't easy! But it works and I love it!
Thanks Man!
you might want to tell people how to set different backgrounds for different workspaces... I actually remembered but now I forgot. You have to disable nautilus for drawing the desktop, don't you? It might be different now compared to when I tried it before.
first, sorry if my english is bad because i'm french, i have past a long time to try to find how we can install it
to install 4 wallpaers you have to use wallpaper plugin on ccsm then when you open it, first you put your diferent pictures with add then you tick the case then in a line code you enter "gconf-editor" and after in apps then nautilus then in preferences you put out the cross of show desktop, then boot your linux and you have your four different wallpaper
i suppose that you have understand what i've said :)
The question still applies. And besides, it is still acceptable to call it a cube as a sphere is often a deformed cube. I'm also interested in the answer.

Hi, all work, but north and south pole doesn't fit as the image I see from other user.my desktop is 1280x1024. any suggestion ? ciao !
Do you mean that the poles are rotated wrong? Or that the rotation is ok, but the edges don't match?

very interest idea!
I set this up and found the detail on the desktops images to be lacking although it is a cool concept.

How to place a different image on each face of the cube?
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vTi5MZ994Ms&feature=related It's not a cube, it's a "sphere"

Ok, then, what is the procedure in the ccsm to place this pictures in the 4 horizontal faces of the SPHERE?
I had a similar idea but you beat me to it, great work!
