Description:
Plastikthunder is a theme for Mozilla Thunderbird to make it have the same look as the KDE programs with the Plastik style and the Crystal SVG 1.0 icon set.

FIREFOX AND MOZILLA USERS: There are 2 similar themes for Firefox and Mozilla. They're called "Plastikfox" and "Plastikzilla" respectively. Get them at the Mozillux website (read below).

ICON SIZE: The toolbar icons have a 32x32 pixels size. It may be too much bigger under low resolutions. You may decrease the size to 22x22, the default in the KDE toolbars. To do this, click the View menu, select "Toolbars" and then "Customize". A popup box will appear with a checkbox called "Small icons". Activate this checkbox and click Ok. You may have to repeat this in other Thunderbird windows.

BUTTON ORDER: You may reverse the button order so they look just like any normal KDE program. To do this, just install the file plastikthunder-rev.jar instead of the normal plastikthunder.jar.

COLOR SCHEME: Plastikthunder doesn't follow the KDE color scheme. Remember it's just a theme for Thunderbird, so it's impossible to do it. It's made with the 'Plastik' color scheme. If you want to change the color scheme you'll have to modify the theme manually.

Please report bugs to 'vfernandez at polinux dot upv dot es'.

Thanks to Everaldo for his Crystal SVG icon sets. You can get them at:

HOW TO INSTALL
-------------------------------------

ATTENTION: If you're upgrading from an older version uninstall it before installing this new one.

After downloading the file, unzip it with your favorite compressing tool. A directory will appear with two .jar files.

Open Thunderbird and go to Tools - Themes. Click "Install". Now browse to that directory and choose one of the two .jar files. If you want to use the reverse button order feature, select plastikthunder-rev.jar. If not, select plastikthunder.jar.

Now the theme should appear on the list. Select it and click "Use". Restart Thunderbird and enjoy it.

Hey this skin is really awesome. I am actually trying to have a unified plastik desktop on windows and most of the programs I use have a plastik theme available. I think it looks great. Can you please update this program for use with Thunderbird 1.5.

jeffremer

To make this compatible with Thunderbird 1.5, unzip the correct jar file, then edit the install.rdf. Change the maxVersion for the target application to something like 1.6a and then rezip the jar (chaning the .zip extension to .jar if Thunderbird complains). The install the same as normal. No guarentees but it works for me - I wouldn't recommend doing this too many times when Thunderbird updates because things could change and the theme could break.

Thanks for this one. I prefer mozilla over kde's own mail/browser, and now both firefox/thunderbird fits into my kde look and feel. (Although i prefer aktive heart over plastik too much.) Great job! :) (however kde staff's improving it much, so i like to use konq for browsing my computer.)

one little thing though: when you select a message the marked folder name in folder view is almost white on white. When you fix this, I would like it even more! ;)) ben

I experience the same thing in Mozilla Mail with Plastikzilla and it annoys me too. I haven't found a fix for it, but if I do, be sure I'll update Plastikthunder.

I've managed to install this theme in Thunderbird 1.0 (released yesterday, I think). You have to edit de install.rdf file, that's in the .jar file, and change the "maxversion" field. That's all... enjoy!

Great! Now it's working. thanks :-)

Hi there. I have thunderbird 0.9, and when i select the .jar file, and confirm the installation, nothing happens. It doesnt appear in the theme list. what could be wrong?

djworld

Have you tried to create a new profile? Try renaming ~/.thunderbird to another name and installing Plastikthunder. If the theme works that way, you can copy the folder "extensions" from your new profile to your old one and that should do the trick.

kreten1

yep, tried but it doesnt work. :-(

- Which jar file have you used, plastikthunder.jar or plastikthunder-rev.jar? - Did you try with the other .jar? - Have you installed only one of them or both at the same time? - Have you made a ' find ~/.thunderbird -name "*plastikthunder*" ' to make sure the theme gets installed in your profile? - Which version of Thunderbird are you using? - And what distribution? - Did you install Thunderbird from mozilla.org or an official source, or did you use the version that comes packaged with your distro? I have tried the theme both in Thunderbird 0.8 and 0.9 and it worked perfectly for me. So I don't know what could be the source of the problem. Perhaps with that info I could guide you to make it work or, if there's any bug, catch it and fix it. Good luck!

I would hang on, TB v1.0 is scheduled to be released in the next 2 weeks ;)

djworld

Then you'll see a Plastikthunder update within the next 2 weeks. ;)

:D

A little bug report, icons of newsgroups rows in the tree are those of TB classic theme

I've been waiting for this for a long time. Firefox and Thunderbird now look and feel the same! :) Keep it up Victor! I can't say how much I appreciate your work. BTW It works fine for me with 0.9, thought it did crash out once, not sure if its related.

djworld

By the way, if you are wondering if I will release a Nuvola version of this theme you're right. But I'll do it when the theme reaches 1.0 because I have to polish it first.

lokheed

Its a little buggy on v0.9 (alpha though), but its so nice to see someone making a theme for Thunderbird. Thanks for making it and hopefully you stick with it to iron out all the bugs and make it completely compatible for v0.9 Awesome job :)

djworld

Keep in mind Thunderbird 0.9 is not officially supported yet. As the theme works well in Thunderbird 0.8 I thought it would be better to release it now so people can start using it and add support later. I'll take a look at the things that need to be changed to add the compatibility and I'll fix a few bugs and then it will be 1.0 beta.

lokheed

Oops forgot to ask. Why did you make it for v0.8? v0.9 was released officially on the 3rd...just curious.

djworld

I started working on this theme around 2 or 3 weeks before 0.9 was released and I had this release nearly finished when 0.9 was out. So I decided to release it now and add compatibility later or else it would have required more work and I would have released it later. Also, due to the way I work, if I make it for Thunderbird 0.8 now and I add support for 0.9 later it's easier for me to maintain backwards-compatibility, but if I make it for Thunderbird 0.9 it would have been harder to make it compatible with 0.8.

lokheed

Gotcha. Just of note, I upgraded to the final release of v0.9 and your theme is not compatible at all. TB disables it and I assume its because of the build number. FF had lots of headaches due to the build number changing with themes and extensions so I assume thats what is happening here. I tested your theme with a recent nightly (labelled 0.8+) and it worked but it is completely unsupported in v0.9, bummer. Just wanted to let you know and thanks again for the development of a nice theme so I dont have to look at the ugly default for to much longer.

zz9pluralzalpha

Looks good, and seems to work OK with 0.9, though maxVersion needs changing.
