If your VLC will not open anymore, and you get errors while trying to use skins. Try opening a non administrative terminal window, and typing: vlc --reset
Should fix it...
I also had installed the Skin and couldn't change back to default. Even I uninstall VLC via Synaptic / apt-get und install it again, the skin skin appears. Very nasty sh**. Anyone an Idea to get it loose.
Ps.: I couldn't get the Preferences Menu. If I click on it, nothing happens. It's seems to be dead.
this skin messed up my vlc settings. i can't switch to another skin anymore. I couldn't find .vcl in my home directory so removed the /usr/share/vlc directory instead. then vlc won't open anymore. f**k..

I thought that addons for vlc were new (released with the 2.0 version. How come I can see comment from 2008 ? I don't understand...
