An Icon Theme should have a valid .theme file among its files and aim to be complete for desktop use under Gnome or KDE Plasma.
If it contains only a single icon or a small set of icons, please use the Icon Sub-Sets or Single Icon/Logo categories instead.

Sorry to ask such a simple thing, but which path do I have to use for elementary to use these icons? I.e. where do I have to copy them?
Depending on where the icons are installed, put redshift-status-on.svg and redshift-status-off.svg in: /usr/share/icons/elementary/panel/22/ Or if that folder doesn't exist: /home/username/.icons/elementary/panel/22/
I tried /apps/22, /apps/24 as well as /apps/salable and /panel/22 but none worked. Do I have to rebuild the icon cache?
I believe rebuilding the cache is a good idea, yes. I usually just delete the icon-theme.cache file for the theme, switch to another icon theme and then back again.
