Description:
I have been searching for a simple, clean theme for my Ubuntu desktop for a while now. I've tried several ones. Some good, some bad. My problem was, that most of them lacked either originality, or style. Yep... I'm one of those guys who wants a GNOME desktop to look like a GNOME desktop and not like some Vista, OSX rip-off.
I also found that most of the dark themes out there are bugish, FFox or OO.o rarely works correctly with them, even with the included hacks!

So, after trying all those themes, I ended up with using the original Intuition window border, and the Inverted version of Clearlooks, with colors based on Human. (Those colors really are good for the human eye.) So I thought why not make a complete theme out of it? There was only the problem with the window border making the whole window look a bit macish, and I wanted to create something different. And then came the brand new DarkRoom theme in Ubuntu 8.10.

This theme is based on all of them.
It has the style of the DarkRoom Metacity them, but with the light, borderless buttons of the original Intuition. It has the colors of Human, but in Inverted style and I've also made the progressbar animated, to add some eye-candy.

All colors can be changed.

IconTheme: Gnome Colors Human (link below)

Background: A 50×50 transparent png, it should be tiled, and set with a nice background color. (linke below)

Tip: You can remove/reorder metacity buttons in gconf-editor by editting /apps/metacity/general/button_layout (My setting is: "maximize:close")
Last changelog:

.2:
Edited metacity theme. Now it finally works the way I intended it to work. (Prelight effect on buttons now work as in Intuition, Shading looks nicer.)
OOPS!! I've forgot to replace the archive. Stupid me.

.3:
Edit on the scrollbars.
Set default iconset to perfectska04's Gnome Colors human.

.4:
Some more edits on scrollbars. (Firefox and OO.o just don't like being left without any forward-backward stepper buttons.)
Bugfix on the checkbox and radiobutton. (No more ugly text prelight effect.)

.5:
Added black panel version, to match Jaunty's (Ubuntu 9.04) new notification theme.
Removed shadow from metacity text.

.8:
Ported (more like reimagined) InvertedRoom to murrine (need help with the line on the top of the tabs!)
Created a version which is compatable with Ubuntu Netbook Remix's window picker applet

"I've tried several ones. Some good, some bad. My problem was, that most of them lacked either originality, or style." So how does mixing standard Ubuntu themes make this original or stylish?

I just don't like the scrollbars, the rest is quite sweet :)

good. i like it.

loook

in my view this is better. style "button" { #bg[PRELIGHT] = shade (1.08, @bg_color) bg[PRELIGHT] = @selected_bg_color } :-)

How did you made the panel show only the icons?

CruelAngel

Oh. They're just launcher icons, not a window switcher. But if you want icon based window switching in your gnome-panel I suggest you check out Aleksey's DockBar: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/DockBar?content=97822
