Why not replace the black color with a Steel Effect (maybe gradient) or a Grey (or gradient) hexagons?...
It was made with Gimp?
In Gimp there is a "steel" gradient (or make one).
I like the Orange tone, but, can you make a Light Grey tone, or a Red Intense tone (maybe another tones too).
