Debian *does* provides Java: $ java -version java version "1.4.2" gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.0.3 20051023 (prerelease) (Debian 4.0.2-3) Copyright (C) 2005 Free Software Foundation, Inc. This is free software; see the source for copying conditions. There is NO warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. Java is not propietary, just some java VMs and JREs are.
