it's not scanned from a magazine. i don't know where the smudges come from. i guess mokuias might be right. i have not much idea about microscopes myself.
it's been taken from a website, the address of which i'm afraid i can't remember any longer. anyway, it was some educational website and it didn't say anything about copyrights there.

It looks as if it is scanned from a magazine (looking at the line at the lower half). Then how can this be GPL?
Hard to tell. Mind you, when using microscopes smudges and markings like that can occur. I suppose we need to ask caminoix... :-)
