While I was reading the new article "Interviews on KPDF Usability Work" at http://dot.kde.org, I became in mind, that I miss a very simple and easy to handle image viewer for KDE (similar to the default image viewer of Mic....t Win...s)
There are already a lot available, but many of them are "full featured" (like Gwenview, Kimdaba...), others like Kuickviw don't satisfy my wishes.
I created a bad and simple mockup that display at least what I am thinking about.
I am not a Coder, so please, if anybody out there in the whole wide world likes to help me realising this project I'd realy aprecciate!
Please have a look at the Mockup and give some suggestions!
To me Gwenview is nearly perfect. It just lacks the speed of kuickshow :( And I don't like that it always uses the same window size despite of the image size. I'd love to have the option in gwenview to open a window with no blank space around the picture/ which fits the displayed image exactly (like kuickshow does). Or a kuickshow that behaves like gwenview despite of those two things mentioned above. Does anybody know an image viewer that matches those requirements?
i've always thought that we need a very fast and simple image viewer like Xp has in it's OS. I alway use kuciksghow but i have to zoom, it doesn't open all images centered so if the pic size changes respect the others the window position also changes and it's impossible to use the full f he screen, and is also very ugly. ALthought as i said i've been using it for years xd
I found "kview" now, which does its job quite well to my needs. I can set it up, that the image I open is shown in a specific size (height/width). My only prob now is, that if I open a big picture, and it is zoomed to, lets say 23 % it has the right "wanted" size. Now I go on, but even smaller pictures a zoomed to 23%. It should display the picture according to the window size. I miss that option... Or didn't I find it??
Hi.
KSquirrel has all features which you need like 'fit width', 'fit height', 'fit window', 'zoom 100%', etc. But now it has problems with huge images, which cann't be located in memory. It will be fixed in 0.6.0-final :)
Try to use Showfoto image Editor/Viewer from digiKam project. It's a viewer like Kuickshow, and an image editor dedicaced especially for photographers. Showfoto come from digiKam project and support digiKam image editor plugins. You can take a look about last digiKam/showfoto screenshots at this url : http://extragear.kde.org/apps/digikam/ digiKam image editor plugins project page can be seen here : http://extragear.kde.org/apps/digikamimageplugins/ Gilles Caulier digiKam project
I am using kuickshow right now. My problem with kuickshow is, that the pictures are always displayed too big for me. I always need to zoom. The other thing is, that I can not navigate with my mouse. I could use the mouse wheel to show the next or previous picture, but I have a Laptop and I use the touchpad. I have use the context menu, or I use the page up and page down buttons. I don't like that...
This is why I made my propose...
Thanks for your comment!! :-D

You should submit these suggestions as a feature request for Kuickshow... the developers are usually responsive to good ideas. The worst that can happen is that the Kuickshow devs won't like your idea, but somebody else might :)
Submit your feature request here: http://bugs.kde.org
Auto-zoom:
Settings -> Configure Kuickshow -> Modifications -> "Shrink image to screen size if larger"
Other key than Page-down/up:
Settings -> Configure Kuickshow -> Viewer Shortcuts
Btw.: In Gwenview you can use +left-mouse to zoom in, +right-mouse to zoom out and middle-mouse to zoom "fit to window".
if your laptop has a synaptics touchpad (and i yet have to encounter a laptop with anything but that), you can configure your touchpad so that moving a finger up and down the border acts like the scrollwheel on a wheel mouse.
here's a snippet from my x config file...
Section "InputDevice"
Driver "synaptics"
Identifier "Mouse[1]"
Option "AccelFactor" "0.0010"
Option "BottomEdge" "4000"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "FingerHigh" "30"
Option "FingerLow" "25"
Option "LeftEdge" "1900"
Option "MaxSpeed" "0.18"
Option "MaxTapMove" "220"
Option "MaxTapTime" "180"
Option "MinSpeed" "0.02"
Option "Name" "Synaptics;Touchpad"
Option "RightEdge" "5400"
Option "SHMConfig" "on"
Option "TopEdge" "1900"
Option "VertScrollDelta" "100"
EndSection

Try showphoto: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=9957

If you start Gwenview giving it an image as a parameter, it will look similar to your mockup, except for the menu bar and status bar.
Its not the best and it doesn't have all the buttons in your mockup, but its cool and fast and does the purpose that you want.
