Description:
What about an option for Konqueror to hide specific files? For example when sharing files with a windows machine it would be useful to hide files called "Desktop.ini" or "Thumbs.db".

It's just a proposal. At the moment there is no code and you just download the screenshots! Maybe there is someone who would like to code it?

I would suggest making it intelligent so that it hides files that the user have never accessed. You filter would then be a white list instead of a blacklist, which is much better from a lock-down point of view.

How about Konqueror always showing an option with all file types that appear in the current view / folder? And show them in the menu so you can check / uncheck them at will? To extend it further, mimetype description can be shown instead of extensions such as .gz etc ... My $0.02

I think it's a good idea too! Than, I would also be able to hide those hideous ~/evolution/ and ~/tmp/ folders !!! So, it would be a filter, not regarding only to the filename but also to the entire path (as I wouldn't want ~/Projects/evolution/ for example). Can you post a wish report on bugs.kde.org ? I would vote for it.

This has been on the wishlist at bugs.kde.org for a while. please vote. http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3212 (My use case for this is hiding .pyc files during python development)

OK, it has 20 votes from me. I also posted a link to this thread.

As a "normal" user (or HUI for Highly Incompetent User) I didn't know about the possibility to filter files, and I don't even know what's a "mimetype"... If this soft can do it for me it is fine. At least it increases for me KDE's usability. Eventually, I agree it has to do it a clean way, fitting the global desktop architecture not to make it more complicated.

No! I really don't want to have a second MS Windows Explorer that hides files and prevents the user from having the control over the file system.

I think we should first care about what users want while you tell us about what you want. Moreover, I read that KDE philosophy is to give users choice, to please purists as you seem to be as well as my mother who barely understand what is a file. Some aspects of windows are bad and some are not. Whatever, we should learn from both.

IceSheep

Of course my two files shouldn't be set as default. It's only an example for what such a function could be useful. I think so too that everybody should be able to decide what he or she wants to see in his file browser (in contrast to M$ windows). So why do not provide the possibility to hide specific self-defined files?

oliverthered

what you want and what you think you want are to different things. 1: A user will always demand that they need what they already have, change is a hard thing for them. 2: When you get use to the change you'll probably not want to go back to the old way, because it's another change. Even you would benefit from some files being hidden e.g. KDE hides .* file by default, turn them on and you get lots of noise, turn them off and you can still access them if you know where to look.

Rinse

Create mime types for .db and .ini in kcontrol and tell Konqueror not to show these filetypes.

IceSheep

That would result in not seeing any *.ini and *.db files!

Linuxglider

i think there is already the possibility for filter content.

IceSheep

Where can I find it? I know that there's a filter but you can only select filetypes that should be shown, can't you?
