it is isnt fatal, but for some reason the first time you try to set it up plasdma-desktop crashes, then you have to it again, and it will crash a second time, but the third time it works.
I am using it on 64bit Kubuntu 14.04 and it works once you get past the two crashes.
I wish it was still in active development, sorry but the kde animated wall papers just are not the same.
Sure this is not as efficent but I can take any short video clip and make it my desktop,
I have not seen a way do it that with the current kde animated desktop.
I have Kubuntu 13.03, installed it as you mentioned,, when i select a video i see the first frame then a desktop crash happen :(.
i disabled desktop effects and tried again unfortuately the same is happened.

Thanks! I wish the developer would create his own kde-apps.org entry for this, this is something that kde has needed for a long time.
KDE from 4.10 onwards has native ability for animated/scripted wallpapers.
