Description:
This patch change resizing behavior of kwin. This behavior is used in Fvwm and Ctwm window managers. It is a little complex to explain, but, I'll try. Currently, when you resize a window, you press meta key, you click on window and window is resizing. With this patch, window isn't resizing until pointer go out of window. This allows a quick and precize resizing. Try it.

I work on 3.4.3 version of kdebase from experimental packages of Debian (deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian ../project/experimental main). I know, I should work on svn trunk. This patch is small, and you shouldn't have problems to use it with other versions.

If you like this resize style, vote for its (better) integration in svn trunk of kwin (Bugs #105946 of http://bugs.kde.org).

How does this deal with corners?
In the current implementation you alt-right click on part of the window and the arrow changes to reflect what corner can be resized. The opposite corner is anchored. Does this patch let you alter any corner that's bumped by the cursor?

Also, how does it deal with shrinking the size? If it only takes effect once a corner has been reached it sounds like you can either not shrink a window, or else you have to release alt-RMB to keep from shrinking the window when the cursor moves back towards the center of the window?

None of these behaviors. Once you have bumped a border, this border is choosen for resizing and it sticks on your cursor. You can alter it (shrink or enlarge) as you want. Exemple :

  • Press Alt.
  • Bump left border.
  • Now, left border follows your cursor (right border is ancored), you can place it where you want.
  • Bump top border and now, it top-left corner which follows your cursor (right and bottom borders are ancored).
  • Resize as you want.
  • Release Alt.
