Hi

I'm sorry but I don't understand how to develop a KIO protocol (I don't speak C++ very well!) so I can only give you an idea...
It's a bit taken from Longhorn or Tiger's ideas.
A pim protocol, which includes your mailbox, your adresbook...
It's simple !
You would type pim in Konqueror and then, with one clic you have your contact list, two clic you find your mail...
In Konqueror, if you clic on a mailto link => a new tab with a mail editor !
It's very hard for me to implement, and to explain.
The file joined is only an idea (with a sample : mail + file) but I have no idea about how to implement it (I know, I already said that
You can vote this at http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82562

It would be nice to see others protocols like that :
- a photos protocol, a bit like what kimdaba can do. See the second file. That protocol should be made with a kpart for a tiny Photo editor, which could integrate into Konqueror...
- a music protocol, like the juk database. Vote for it at http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82581
(I can't send a sample it's to heavy to send...)
Last changelog:

I corrected a bit the sample folder to be able to click on the file in the fake mail.
Add of two others idea

If you think in terms of KIO it seems to be an issue accessing the right communication protocol (LDAP, IMAP, POP3,..). Otherwise it looks more like having two KDE components exchanging message (yes, all KDE components are not necessary widgets). The question being what is the kde 'background' component that handles this.

To add such things and even more it would be nice to implement Apple's Spotlight (from Tiger) in KDE/Linux, but somehow i think that it would need the kernel suport to work like Spotlight... Am I wrong?

You are true, there is a need of a kernel component, but it already exists ! With the ACL and/org ReiserFS4, you can have that kind of features. But I think that at a KDE level only, it can be implemented by a database managing all the files "travelling" via KIO, KFileDialogs... It's hard for us because of the lack of global core, I mean a GTK app would not be able to use that... I think it's THE problem of linux and its GUI : GTK, Qt, Motif (yes, it exists always), KDE, GNOME... To much libraries for the same thing. So we need a kernel-level implementation and/or a Desktop-level implementation with a standard protocol to allow all apps to use that easily, and I think it's not win because to much developers don't want to care about that kind of things : just see the number of X implementations : I'm fed up with that and it's boring graphics cards makers who are not able to create graphics drivers because there isn't any driver compatibility between X.org|XFree / XServer / ... The features of spotlight are a need, a true need, we have to implement it quickly, but our structure (the bazar) is our problem to do that...

A freedesktop.org standard ? Perhapse it's what you wanted. Because I don't envisage a kernel support for that : it's too hi-level. I think it's a scope for freedesktop.org.

It's what I said ! A kernel-level and/or a desktop-level......

Good Idea, I like to see cross functionality available wherever possible. something related I've wanted to suggest (sorry if I am hiijacking your thread, it just seems appropriate here) is that when you click on the clock applet in kicker, a calender window pops up, it would be nice if clicking on a date in this small calander would open up the kdePIM calander to the same date,

Yes, nice idea. What is needed is a cross-application kind of framework which allow all the apps to use all the PIM datas, and then transform Kontact in an interface to that "framework". With that way, all the apps would be able to use every PIM data. And it would be nice to have the same for photos, music, video... See http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82581
