That being said, my "Easy RSS" mod is now available as a patch rather than a "branch". I know the difference is subtle...

Also, I will work to get a patch for SuperKaramba out soon -- although adventurous users can used diff3 to make their own

Thanks for your understanding -- I know we all want to see Karamba succeed.

I have created this patch for karamba-0.17 to include a new meter/sensor combination that supports RSS/RDF in a simple, straightforward manner without the need for installing 3rd party software (i.e. perl, perl modules, python, etc.). I realize that there are some karamba scripts and SuperKaramba python modules that accomplish the same thing, but I think my solution may be better solution to novice users or people not interested in installing extra software.
Please see the README for more info.

Please, where can I get your theme? I love it, but couldn't find it in your tar.gz (I downloaded it before you released the patch) Thanks, chepati

Excellent stuff! Would you mind telling me where you got your wallpaper from :-)

In my (misdirected) enthusiasm, I posted a complete "branch" version. In hindsight, this was not the best thing to do. Therefore, I have re-released as a patch to the most recent karamba source. I know karamba's maintainer is probably totally overwhelmed, so I'll just be more patient :) Hope everybody understands. Thanks!
Hmm, generally, this is a cool thing, and I thank you for it. But after Karamba, SuperKaramba this is now the third version of the proggy. isn't it possible to have just one version? Is it possible to patch the existing SuperKaramba??
I will work on creating a patch for SuperKaramba. I agree that too many versions will confusing.
you are absolutely right. this should be released as a patch to karamba, and the author of karamba should decide if he/she would like to merge it into the main karmba tree. only if the author decides not to include the patch (and this seems like a usefull enough patch that at least i think it be included) should the branch be made (and even then, it would be better to maintain it as a patch to the main karmba, than a fork of the code) this way if users want both this feature and new features from the main karmba project, they can have them both by simply applying your patch to the relevent version of karamba (or just the main version of karmaba if the patch gets merged with that).
Please submit this as a patch to vanilla Karamba before worrying about SuperKaramba. Karamba is still the "official" version and Hans seems to have had his work somewhat enthusiasticly "borrowed". Karamba also is, in it's design, a generic tool with few dependencies and the potential to grow into something useful to a wide audience. SuperKaramba seems to me to be a cool hack but with very little design and thought for the wider community other than to see who can produce a OS-X like panel the quickest.
What do you mean by "borrowed"? Are you implying something improper? I took Hans' code and give him full credit for it. His name is on the bottom of every page of the SuperKaramba website and in all the README's etc. The point is that Hans might not want some crazy person coming along and turning his simple and straight forward system into something a little more complex and thats fine. So I took his base and built on top of it. Thats the spirt of open source. If it doesn't do what you want, change it. If it doesn't exist, find something else that you can build upon. Just like I used his code, he is free to use mine. And when SuperKaramba reaches the point where its a bit more feature complete and stable, I'd be happy to merge it back in. It just seems stupid to try and merge them when SK is still in the very first and most turbulent stage of development. In my personal opinion, SuperKaramba has a slightly more ambitious goal than Hans' Karamba (I am not implying Karamba is less important, just different). The goal of SK is to make an engine that runs cool desktop eyecandy written in Python. It's very similar to "Konfabulator" for the Mac. The goal of Karamba is to allow users to write themes in the easiet way possible, like "Samurize" for Windows. If Hans and I have different goals, then I think its ok if we work on our own hobby projects without the approval of the other :) And if there is some notion that I'm trying to usurp Karamba by naming mine "Super", I would be happy to discuss changing the name to something entirely different. I didn't mean anything by it. It's a really dumb name and was a joke.
Hey, Apologies if I sound like I was ragging on SuperKaramba. I think it is a cool hack and does look pretty damn good. I think my concern with it is that it seems to have such different goals to Karamba that using the name and even, originally, releasing versions called Karamba rather than waiting for Hans to get back from vacation could be misinterpreted. I don't think for a moment you intended to steal, or even fork Hans' code. I can understand the enthusiasm with which SuperKaramba burst onto the scene! I really like Karamba and can see, perhaps with dcop calls and a few bells and whistles, it could turn into a way for anybody with a little scripting, to be able to get their output into the GUI. With the above dcop interface, it could even be quite sophisticated but SuperKaramba is a way more ambitious project. It is an exciting project too but it's much more than the simple yet useful tool that Karamba is. I feel that while you are so closely associated with SuperKaramba you just might eclipse it so that a useful tool will be gone. Your tool is also useful but being much more sophisticated, is less accessable to the average script dabbler. Anyway, apologies if I sounded overly critical. Regards
