Description:
Amarok Wolf Howl Icon for Amarok

Included in this pack are the source file (Inkscape .svg) and a preview of the icon. I don't know svg that well, so if the svg is sloppy or doesn't work well with some other program, blame inkscape! =D

The idea I have with the source file is that the larger one would be used for large images, like tshirts, posters, etc. the smaller ones would be used for icons that are about their sizes.. (ie. 128x128, 64x64 for the medium one, and 32x32, 22x22 for the smallest one)

Hope you like this, and enjoy!
Last changelog:

1.4:
-I just noticed that the ears were off a bit - it's blends better now.
1.3:
-minor tweaks. I was unsatisfied with the 22x22 version, and the color.
-also changed the images so that none of the actual image was cut off (inkscape 0.39 bug?)
1.2:
-minor source file changes - I made it so there is no scaling of the actual svg when you want to save as a 22x2 file. ie. there is an svg wolf_howl icon at 22x22 pixels _in_ the svg. there wasn't before.
-changed the lower resolution one so you can recognize it easier. (thank you gimp)
-changed the color of the wolf to something with more contrast-can also do a different color if need be)
-moved the arches so they were position in such a way that the icon is square.
-removed the arch outline in the smaller icons.
1.1:
-changed the arches so that they look more like the crystal theme.
-changed the furry underside so that there was less detail but still looked furry (I hope)
-also changed the smaller version so that it looks more distinct (I hope)

I like style, gray is good for wolf but i dont like about that red, mayby possible to add 4-5 colored version?

I don't know if I'm allowed to change it now that the contest is closed, but for the record- I _can_ change the color of anything upon request.

I don't really like this one. To me an icon should give you some clue to what it does at first glance. This icon refers to the title of the program and not the function. I think mascots are cute, but should be reserved for the splash screen. Someone said that the waves made it more obvious that it was an audio app. But that's only in hindsight. If i was a new KDE user, freshly migrated, i wouldn't know what to make of the icon. "Maybe it's the instant messenger? Maybe an RSS aggregator? Or something to do with broadcasting?" Further, because of the more muted color-scheme, i may assume it's actually a Gnome application. I understand that people don't like bolder colors, but that's where KDE is at right now. And if you're going for an integrated look that's what you'll need to use. Nothing personal. Just my view. And don't worry, it seems i'm well in the minority. =]

The wolf is howling. The issue is that most of the obvious clichés for music players have already been used, in form or another. And it certainly states its purpose better then Kaffeine's icon... heh. I'd assume folks that can't figure out that amaroK is a KDE program probably don't care one way or another.

yakhan

I'll admit it would be better than Kaffeine's, but that's no great accomplishment. I guess my point is that clich

eean

Are you saying wolfs howls aren't musical enough? They would be offended by that, I'm sure.

Mephistoki

I like this one very much but IMHO the icon should make clearer, that Amarok is a sound application in any way. Like the wolf in gray maybe you can find a way to place a kind of membran or note into the icon so it becomes clearer what amarok does.

eean

Um, no. Icons shouldn't have too much.

wygiwyg

Small sizes are not good enough. I simply can't see that it is a wolf's head when it is scaled to 32x32, 22x22 and 16x16. Amarok means wolf's eye, and I think that a combination of an eye and a speaker is much better solution.

leinir

Amaroq just means wolf, not wolf's eye.

tiny

I agree, it doesn't scale down very well. Why not make two versions of it, one for small icons, one for large ones? Maybe just a dark silhouette for the wolf's head would be an alternative for the small sizes (16x16 and 22x22). the detailed head as ist is now should be ok for larger sizes, though. tina

I have solved the problem and made a new icon.. =) It's quite different however, so I made a new release => http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=18711

I really like it! That's a really great icon in it's orignial colors. But I don't like those strong colors (green, blue, yellow and orange). I'd recommend a lightblue-gray color if you really want to color it.

euxneks

I've been sick (a cold) with a _bad_ headache for a while here.. When I get better I'll try to implement as many suggestions as I can.. They are all valid and I will try to work them out.. Particularly the different color theme.. Also I'll try to make the arches fit in a bit more..

leinir

And not just because of my obsession with wolves ;) While this particular version of your wolf howl icon might not scale too well (maybe too much detail?) it is certainly distinct and even beautiful. The wolf's howl is quite possibly one of the most distinct sounds in the animal kingdom, and certainly known by everyone (for better or worse). This one has my vote :) Also, on a random note, it will be possible, with an icon as different as this one, to actually make a Reinhardt style icon out of it ;)

lokheed

Thats funny. I was thinking the exact opposite about the scaling. I thought it scaled down rather nicely. I think the red archs in the back could use some reworking to better suit the entire icon and maybe some polish on the wolf but overall, its a fantastic job.

leinir

Actually you're absolutely right, it does scale nicely :) I simply have a very blurry screen ;) I saw it on a nice screen earlier today and it looks just fine :)

theobroma

But I think the red crescents should be more "crystalized".

Ekardnam

Yes, I agree. Otherwise, a great icon!

code

very nice! i hope this will be the amarok icon :)

mrpengo

Very good concept. Another animal for the desktop.

markey

Great icon, but at small sizes (24px) it's difficult to recognize IMHO.

markey

Just to be clear: The icon does _not_ have to be related to Wolves. The artist has complete artistic freedom on the design.

Xatax

I love it! But could you make some color themes for it? I would like to see Orange, Blue and Green theme also(Possibly even more colors?)! Tnx :)
