Description: as an uploader, i find it very irritating when people vote my uploads down without giving any reason. i can understand some don't like my work but i have no idea how i could improve it.
i think it would be a good idea to remind people about commenting every time they vote anything bad.
an extreme (perhaps too extreme?) version would be not to let people vote down without providing a comment.
ps. please, don't vote this upload down without giving a reason...
do you mean that whenever i want to add a personal opinion on sth not concerning the upload very strictly, i should start a new thread on some forum and only post a link to the thread so that anyone has a chance to find it? it seems to me it'd be taking even more space. besides, your post doesn't seem to be connected with the upload too much, either.
everyone for your support :)
don't you find it funny is some strange way that the comments on this proposition are in general positive while the rating is pretty low?
i guess it means a big "no" from the takers, as maitre could put it, and a "yes" from the givers...
sometimes i feel like it's time for me to become a bitter old man.
Seriosly - stop whining. There will always be people who take whatever they can, for nothing, and badmouth it all the same. Get used to it. Don't let it bother you, have a beer or play with your kids or something instead of getting pissed off about it. Otherwise you are going to be unbearably bitter ;)
i'm probably an idealist and perfectionist deep down. it's causing me enough headache not to be able to get my own work as fine as i'd like it to be. i guess you're right. i'll go to the fridge and have a beer the first moment i feel like a bit of sport.
I will agree with this, but I believe that everyone should be able to post. Anonymous people's votes should count, but have less of an impact. Or maybe there should be two categories....General Public and registered members. I think that this would solve the idea that everyone should count, but those who don't care enough to login / register to leave feedback should be treated...differently.
I'm getting a vibe here of people feeling that ratings and comments from submitters are somehow more important or worthwhile than ratings or comments from people who have never submitted anything.
Are people who don't submit to this site somehow inferior to those oh-so-special people who have? Do their opinions count for less?
Stop being elitist pricks is my suggestion.
Heh-heh,
This is good point. Ratings have no point if all users/visitors cannot vote.
However, required feedback when voting is not bad idea, also some more detailed statistics about voting and ratings will be more than welcome I think.
this is not exactly so. of course, all opinions count but generally speaking it's not true that they all count equally. you can call me whatever you wish but don't tell me that if i had a heart attack i'd be as ready to follow a plumber's advice as that of a cardiologist.
uploading anything or not is of course not a great way to determine whether someone has a good or good taste.
still, i prefer being voted down by someone who's uploaded sth than by someone who's just dropped in for the first and last time.
It's very easy for anyone to click "good" or "bad". That, by itself alone, is THE reason to force people to comment if they select "bad".
On a personal level, I'd much rather receive my ratings from the people who GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY and not the ones who just TAKE FROM IT.
If you have a chip on your shoulder about people who take from this community and give nothing back, then you're in the wrong community, mate. This community is all about making stuff freely available to anyone, not just to other people who share. If you don't like the idea of people being able to take your work for free and then say it's useless, all without ever giving anything back, then go and join some art community where real people aren't allowed in.
Again, I would encourage people to stop being elitist pricks.
if i prefer ratings which are too high (you can still see the real rating by looking at _how much too high_ they are), or ratings which drop down without any reason, and where every one who's never done anything can vote you down just because so was his fancy of the day.
maitre:
yes, it seems to me, too, like the site admins have done the site, advertised it and stopped ever taking care any more.
Perhaps in a perfect world, but this will more than likely just put people off down-rating something and lead to everything having artificially high ratings. Sure, it'd be nice for people to leave a comment and they should be urged to, but it shouldn't be a requirement imo.
I rated this down because this isn't really any kind of site content, it's just a complaint (which would probably be better aimed at site admins?)
You could always have the same requirement for voting up then. Feedback on what's good about something is useful too.
I'm voting this up because I think that verbal feedback is far more useful than ratings.
hmm, i don't know exactly how the rating system works. to be honest, i've always thought it's a bit queer. just ordinary points would seem a better solution to me.
anyway, i can see this very upload's been voted down at least a few times but only got two comments...
do you think i'm wrong guessing that those who upload nothing or hardly anything are the first ones in the queue to vote other people's work down?
Well, to me it seems like there is some other balancing mechanism that brings the rates down automatically. I was watching top 15 gtk2 themes and saw that periodicaly (at approximately the same period) almost all themes go down for 1-3 percent so I concluded that votes are not the only thing that affects the rating. I may be wrong though :))
yes, somehow, time is a factor. That is extremely silly but....
That's why themes that at one time were in the low to mid 80's are now in the low to mid 70's. How does 6 months or a year gone by lower the quality of a theme? It's a poor rating system.
You can't just view 'most downloads', for obvious reasons, so 'highest rated' should be the best way to find the good stuff. Unfortunately this is not the case.

Okay... it sucks. You happy now?
this isnt a whining forum. dont make a post complaining about something. do it in a forum or something you just wasted space on this site.

You can like/don't like a theme without any reason so you can vote down or up to an upload
If you have no reason then I assert that your up/down vote has no objective value, and I'd rather you not make it.

it's offtopic, but: can you tell me, which font is used in the screenshot? :)
it's luxi sans :)

Rating systems are horrible. Post your work elsewhere, no one listens. We've been complaining about rating systems for years.

of course. People have no idea how much work goes into making an icon set or a wallpaper.

ya i agree. Ive seen it happen where it just randomly mods things down. Not cool IMO.
