How to change a menu button: 1. add a main menu applet to your panel 2. run gconf-editor 3. go to /apps/panel/objects/object_1 (number at the end may differ for you) 4. check "use custom icon" option 5. in "custom icon key" field add an image pathLast changelog:
I've done some color variations as requsted. To get more just use hue/saturation filter in Gimp.
To all those having issues installing:
1. add the "Main Menu applet" to your panel
2. run gconf-editor
3. navigate to /app/panel/objects
4. find the object_x that contains "object_type=menu-object".
5. check "use_custom_icon"
6. change the "custom_icon" value to the full image path including extension.
Hope this helps all those having issues.

Why? Why? Why?
Why would I want my convenient gnome to be more Windows-Esque?
I realize that it's cool that it's so easy for Linux to be so configurable, but hey, why would I want to configure is as such. I left windows to escape bullshit, not to recreate it.
Still, though. Good work finding this. I suppose that it's kind of cool that you can do that and in only 5 steps. Good work, although it's not something that I would want to do.
Am I missing something here? Since when is Open Source, the GNOME project, or even Linux about doing shameless rip-offs? GNOME, as well as KDE, already have this kind of uninspired "start" buttons, only they didn't overstep their boundaries by actually writing "START" on it, as it has always been incredibly redundant, and fairly misleading. I don't consider this a step in the right direction for anything related to this website's philosophy and purpose (Open Source, Linux On The Desktop, GNOME etc.)

Yeah, its not always:
/apps/panel/objects/object_1
For me it was:
/apps/panel/objects/object_16
for a newly added main menu.
I guess the easiest way is to remove the main menu you have now, readd it and then looks for the highest number or just go through them until you see the one that has the following keys:
object_type: menu-object
tooltip: Main Menu
