Description: An elegant and functional menu with many themes, not just vista. Currently supported languages: English, Czech, French, Spanish, Portuguese
-Download package from this page -Extract to your desktop, and double click on the installer inside -Right click on the gnome panel, and go to 'add to panel' and select vista menu
We need people to help make new themes and translate the menu to new languages! Please send me a message if you can help.Last changelog:
Beta 1.07: Includes new theme and fixes multiple program launching and command line errors Beta 1.08: Basically a total rewrite! Beta 1.08_1: Fixed Blue Wave theme. Beta 1.08_2: More languages added.
I've noticed some people have been getting errors when adding the Vista Menu to the panel. You may recieve an error such as "The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_VistaMenu".Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?"
Just open Terminal and type
sudo apt-get install deskbar-applet
Python 2.6 - menu can start without problems if not problem with errors in code - needs replase /usr/bin/python2.5 on /usr/bin/python in shell files (.server).
I translate it on Russian, and will fix some problems: configuring form and Language Strings.
It workin on Ubuntu 8.10 with Vista themes.
Vista Menu has been discontinued, it's now called Gno-Menu and is available through launchpad. I can send you a translation template for Russian and would very much appreciate your help with translation.
Could you please make a version that uses the latest Python 2.6? It's really hard to get this running on Arch Linux because it has removed Python 2.5 and adding it would cause a lot of problems.
I have the menu running, but I can't seem to make the menu be transparent and I'm using the ubuntu icon which has the top circle image as well, but it there is a gap between the two images. Any way to fix this?
Thanks for your help. That would be great if you could send those to me. Or I could send you the newest release of the menu - the one on the site is outdated, I just haven't had the time to package the new one and get it on here.
these are some of the bugs i fixed
Button now can be usable at any size of the menu
fixed bugs with metacity
orb now always on top and in correct location
changed the name because of copyright issues
but it would be great if you could send me the latest version to
helderfraga@gmail.com
i also added full composite support (when it exists ) that allows the menu to look like this

small problem in the bottom icons
Looks good. I would love to try a new version as I am having problems with the current. I have to add it to the panel after every reboot because of an OAFIID:GNOME error. After I delete the configuration from the error box, I can add it manually just fine. Also have problems with it wanting to place the orb top at the top of the screen sometimes. Glad to see the project is not dead.
I got the WinXP "start" button working, but I can't switch themes, or get it to be transparent. I installed the beta .deb, and the tar.gz, and they both acted the same. Here is the terminal output:
sudo apt-get install python2.5 python-xdg python-cairo python-gconf python-xlib deskbar
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
python2.5 is already the newest version.
python-xdg is already the newest version.
python-cairo is already the newest version.
python-gconf is already the newest version.
python-xlib is already the newest version.
python-xlib set to manually installed.
E: Couldn't find package deskbar
Yeah, it couldn't find the package...Can you help?
Your screenshots look great! I love the one where you have the gnome logo and the transparent panel.
I believe it's deskbar-applet now.
I will release the next version of it soon where changes are applied automatically without having to restart the menu.

Hi, very very thanks for your work! I'm testing your panel and this is the best for me. I'm Italian, i've see you don't have a translation, if you want i can help you for my language.
Now i've a question, how i can change / insert my own personal user picture in your menu?
Thanks in advance
hello. i am having a problem with the kore theme. I use a single panel at the top of my screen, and when i press the button, the top part of the kore menu theme gets cut off by the panel. i was wondering if there is a way to make the menu show up a little lower.
also...
is there a way to show the menu without adding it to the panel. for instance, if i had no panels, could i press a key combo and make vista menu appear?
For ubuntu, the list is wrong (it has deskbar instead of deskbar-applet)
It should be:
sudo apt-get install python2.5 python-xdg python-cairo python-gconf python-xlib deskbar
Sorry if this was already spotted, I didn't read the 22 pages of comments...
But I love this applet and can't wait to see how it progresses! I'd love to see more themes integrated or (even better) a theme to match the current interface/icons.
Very Nice Job!!!
I am going to change your start menu icon though, I hope you don't mind.
I want a regular Vista icon.
I migrated my 77 year old dad's Vista desktop to Hardy. The more familiar looking the better for him.
Have you seen any Vista start icons? I have looked for three days & still have not found one <GGG>
Terrific menu. This should be very easy for him. It installed in like 30 seconds!
Good directions!
Thanks Much!

sorry but which operating system in this work compatible for?
The version in Spanish does not work, because some items are in English yet, and this make impossible to find the folders.
