Description: A person already posted about the scroll bar spacing, http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Better+scrolls+in+GTK?content=48820 but what about the button in combo box entry and normal buttons?
There are a few pixels (wide or height) that can be saved! Gnome platform can improve the looks and be more confortable.
The screenshot is a comparisson of buttons, scroll bars and combo box.

I tried GtkComboBox::padding = 0,
GtkComboBox::padding = {0,0,0,0},
GtkComboBox.GtkButton::padding = 0,
But none of this worked :s

lol, you are not an expert, but give some stupid suggestions. About stock icons (they rocks, the size depend on the theme), about combo box (it also depends on the theme), about scroll bars (it depends on the engine). And your suggestions make gtk widgets look like windows one. You better return to the windows, with their microwidgets and tasteless glossy colors.

Cool, good to see you're addressing those complaints, a couple comments though, first of all there's ALOT of wasted space around the horizontal separator, which I think would produce more benefits.
Second the button on the button on the list entry box got squished and I don't think it looks as good that way.
Finally I think the biggest complaints are the oversized buttons, i'd love to see if you could get those smaller too. (in the second screenshot you can tell the font of the list entry is smaller, but then there's alot of wasted space vertically)

It was on purpose to leave that space in the horizontal separator (to separate the table and the combo).
I squished the button in the combo to look like the Qt combo (watch the plastyk style, imagine it is editable. http://doc.trolltech.com/4.0/qcombobox.html#details )
Yeah, the buttons are too big in Gnome, because its like a standard to put stock icons on them (i.e. save button have a disquete, cancel have an x, open have a folder, ok and accept have a tick, ...)
I forgot to compare the buttons when i took the screenshtos.
If you are tired of that big buttons, you can disable the stockicons on the buttons by adding this line in your theme gtkrc.
gtk-button-images = 0
For exmaple if you want to modify Human theme (ubuntu default)
sudo gedit /usr/share/themes/Human/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
paste the line below the comments.
The problem is that firefox dont recognize that option.
Gnome has an app to configure menus and toolbar icons. That app can be extended to configure the stockicons on the buttons, maybe by size and on/off.
If you want your buttons smaller conserving the icons,
- append this setting to your theme
gtk-icon-sizes = "<otherSettings>:gtk-button=16,16"
- in case that line does not appear in the theme, paste it at the top
gtk-icon-sizes = "gtk-button=16,16"

Add this line to the gtkrc: GtkScrolledWindow::scrollbar-spacing = 0 0 is the number of pixels between the scrollbars and the scrolled window

Button padding 0 only on the combobox widget should do the trick.

I literally cannot tell the difference between the two screenshots. You guys must be really anal-retentive.
