24/07/2003: Added a fully working config file! I took Exdaix (Thanks Exdaix) config file and modified it so the gradient looks exaclty like in the screenshot (with the blue bar). The current screenshots are not made with the gimp but are actual screenshots of my boot process.

If you have ttf messages enabled, you might want to get the font I used at http://www.dafont.com/dl.php?os=win&fichier=usenet
Gentoo users will probably want this patch to get the progressbar going: http://www.aichler.net/gentoo/bootsplash/ I got a hard time setting up bootsplash under gentoo, especially getting the progress bar to move. This was caused in a what I think is a bug in the splash wrapper. So if the progressbar still doesn't work after applying the patch from aichler.net: edit /sbin/splash (no, it is not a binary) and comment out line 55 (put a # before it), and type below : export res="your_resolution", for example: export res="1024x768"

28/5/2003: I've put a new screen (with a progressbar without block progress) online, this time I think it should be doable to make a bootsplash config file. As I'm having exams in two weaks, I currently don't have the time to make the config file, but within a month or so, I'll make a config file so that you really can boot with this splashscreen!

This is the coolest splash screen i've seen. Your design made me get the scrolbar working on gentoo. Thanks a lot :) You now need to come up with a black tux kde theme to match this awesome bootsplash. Thanks again.
FYI, you can take care of those /dev/rtc errors by making sure you have "Enhanced Real Time Clock Support" compiled into your kernel. It can be found under Character Devices.

hmm .... unfortunately the BlackTux Silent-Bootsplash doesn't work on my gentoo laptop... :-(
first I emerged the bootsplash-patch, than epm and last I installed the progressbar-patch from aichler.net
after that i had downloaded the BlackTux-Theme and installed it exactly like in the tutorial described:
mkdir -pv /etc/bootsplash/personal/images/
cp -rv /etc/bootsplash/default/config /etc/bootsplash/personal/
rm /etc/bootsplash/default
ln -s /etc/bootsplash/personal /etc/bootsplash/default
in /etc/conf.d/bootsplash.conf i changed: BOOTSPLASH_THEME=personal
then i copied the two images in /etc/bootsplash/personal/images and the bootsplash-1024x768.cfg in /etc/bootsplash/personal/config
mount /boot
/sbin/splash -s -f /etc/bootsplash/default/config/bootsplash-1024x768.cfg > /boot/initrd-1024x768
ok, but after reboot, there only appears the small "gentoo linux" graphic in the top-right corner (and of course the bootmessages (like in screenshot 2))
So how can I get the silent mode ?
Any ideas?

ok, now i added splash=silent to my grub.conf:
title=Gentoo Linux 1.4 (+fb +splash)
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/bzImage splash=silent root=/dev/hda3 video=vesa:ywrap,mtrr vga=0x317
initrd=/boot/initrd-1024x768
but nothing has changed... :-(
any ideas?

I've been messing around with bootsplash and I have a working version of the first screenshot.
The only thing it doesn't have is block progress or a nice fancy gradient like in the screenshot. Currently bootsplash can only do a two color gradient, and the one in the screenshot is a 3-4 color (shade) gradient.
It looks close enough, and very snazzy though. It should be ready soon, as I can only get 1024x768 to work, but I should solve this bootloader-resolution problem soon.
I'd say less than a week and I should have it done.
Thanks! I was thinking about drawing every line in the gradient with a seperate box. Would be great though! If you post a link where we can find the config file, I'll put it here for download, together with the GIMP files, so everyone can mess around with it, and ofcourse I would mention your name ;-)

I tried rhgb from rawhide but boot up just takes hours when it's installed.
For some reason it slows everything down
(as in really really really slow boot)
First of all I like this bootsplash, but I didn't get the init-scripts work. Can anyone send a toturial or a URL of a toturial, which describes how to modify the init-scripts of a DEBIAN-System
Hey anndi, I also didn't find any information about the init scripts of Debian. I myself use gentoo, but my brother uses debian, and he recommended to have a peek on the debian website (http://www.debian.org/), if you don't find it there, I have no clue either.

It doesn't (yet), bootsplash doesn't support themable progressbars, or not in this way. I have sent an e-mail to the bootsplash maintainer if this was planned, no anwser so far... If you just want this image with the regular bootsplash progressbar, you indeed have to patch your kernel. For more information go to http://www.bootsplash.org .

I've tried to design a widget theme but I don't have enough skills/inspiration ... maybe in the future when I know the gimp better

you have to supply a kernel argument in your grub/lilo file: splash=silent

You should really make one that just says "linux" and not getoo on top. I love how it looks, but it just wouldn't go with my debian system.
The gimp files are included, feel free to modify them to your own needs (a text layer for debian is supplied in the gimp files) Regards, Bruno

Seems you made this for debian. Do you use the Suse kernel patch or the pre-alpha of rhgb or something else?

Great bootsplash. I have SuSE 8.2 PRo, is it possible to just replace my current bootsplash image with this one?
