Description: KEXI is a visual database app builder. It can be used for designing database applications, inserting and editing data, performing queries, and processing data. Forms can be created to provide a custom interface to your data. All database objects – tables, queries, forms, reports – are stored in the database, making it easy to share data and design.
Kexi is considered as a long awaited Open Source competitor for Microsoft Access, FileMaker and Oracle Forms. Its development is motivated by the lack of Rapid Application Development (RAD) tools for database systems that are sufficiently powerful, inexpensive, open standards driven and portable across many operating systems and hardware platforms.
KEXI designed to work well not only on KDE but also on GNOME and other environments. It should be usable also without running KDE Desktop on Linux/Unix, MS Windows and Mac OS X platforms (support for the latter two is planned to be re-added).

Hi,
have upgraded from .8 which was part of a SuSE 10 install. I then downloaded the rpm from the link and installed the newer version. However kexi will not start ... any ideas.
OK, I retraced my steps to .8, however, I noticed an updated rpm on the 11/04, so downloaded a i586 base rpm for SuSE 10, and installed. Kexi still loading as .8
and I cannot find any reference under YAST for Kexi, just the KOffice base package. Kexi at the prompt does not produce errors, just the wrong version running. I would like to operate using MySQL on my server, also SuSE v9 I think from memory.
Sorry this is all a bit garbled
I cannot be sure what rpm have you got installed. I guess you have not compiled Kexi from the source code?
From the command line try
rpm -qa | grep kexi
and then
rpm -e kexipackagename
I want to use kexi to make a small database application, but I don't know how to do some things, so I need some DOCS or how-to's, but I don't find anything.
I.e. how to do an app for a user, without kexi interface.
Another thing is scripts.
But I have to say I have good vibrations with kexi.
There's a translation project for the docs to english. Somebody is doing that, so keep checking Kexi Project web site.
There's no "final mode for users" functionality with editing blocked in Kexi. It's is planned after 1.0.
As a temporary solution I could recommend: to prevent creating and modifying tables by user you can alter permissions for creating and/altering tables using your database administration tool (eg. pg Admin or mysql Administrator).
Ok, managed to get it installed but just found a crash:
1. open kexi
2. blank project, click ok
3. select new project stored in file, then click create (shouldnt that be greyed out at this stage?).
4. it then crashes.
It works ok using next. So maybe grey out create early on.
I tried running kexi shortly after installing the rpm from pbone and got this message:
kexi: error while loading shared libraries: libkdeinit_kexi.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Im using Suse 9.3 Pro which didnt come with the koffice database module so i got version 1.3.91-3, while other modules are version 1.3.5-11.
Kexi has a lot more front than Knoda I liked a lot of its ideas and layout but at this stage of development it dosen't deliver unlike the rock solid Knoda it isn't anywhere near useable.
Only if OO.org Base will be more stable. For now it's like a mockup of an application. And try to use it, then tell me if you like Java-based database (HSQL DB) used by OO.org Base?
It's all not about complete replace an app by another, what is impossible for many MS-technology-hostages. It's all about a choice, more choice, better choice...

any appimage, flatpak or snap for this that could be linked or uploaded?
No fresh appimage, flatpak or snaps yet. Stay tuned!
We've just updated the Ark packages to 1.0.2. (tagged 1.5.2 to follow koffice version numbering though). Ark Linux users simply apt-get install kexi (and maybe kexi-MySQL and/or kexi-PostgreSQL and/or kexi-msaccess); others in need of RPMs can try http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/SRPMS/koffice-1.5.2-1ark.src.rpm http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/i586/kexi-1.5.2-1ark.src.rpm http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/i586/kexi-MySQL-1.5.2-1ark.src.rpm http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/i586/kexi-PostgreSQL-1.5.2-1ark.src.rpm http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/i586/kexi-msaccess-1.0.2-1ark.src.rpm

Try to run 'kexi' command in the command line and see what are the messages. Also provide exact name of your rpm file.

Or maybe your 0.8 package is named koffice-database? To find out what version do you have, try: rpm -qa | grep koffice-database

Update: Translating Kexi Handbook to english is still in progress, a part of it can be found on the official KDE documentation web site: http://docs.kde.org/development/en/koffice/kexi/
Can it work with mdb database from MS Access?
> Can it work with mdb database from MS Access? You should be able to migrate an MDB database into kexi using the Tools->Migration menu option. You'll need the keximdb driver which isn't distributed as part of kexi itself, but may be packaged for your distro. See http://www.kexi-project.org/wiki/wiki/?MDBDriver for more info, or get the source from ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/apps/KDE3.x/database/

Fixed before releasing (Tue April 19 23:39:15): http://tinyurl.com/d8e67 So in newer packages you will have it fixed too.
cool :)

Try to get/request well prepared binaries from your distro maker.
I think itl be easier to compile from source.
it will work on 9.3 if you dl and compile it. File's only 2.2 meg and instructions are provided on the web site

I saw that the new OpenOffice.org (still test version 2.0) has a so called OpenOffice.org Base, this can replace MSAccess forever.

can I use it with mysql???
