I am really impatient for a multifile search and replace tool. Kate for me is one of the best editors but I miss this feature for HTML-editing very much. Are there any alternatives to the text based grep and sed tools in Linux?
I am only able to connect via my Windows partition, and basically, it's not easy upgrading my system, having dialup and all. Then along came this site, and install upon leisure, so I've been dorking KDE ever since. I even got to upload (Windows can't see my Linux partition, and Linux can't write to Windows, so I use a multisession CD)! YAY UPLOAD!

Finally, a replacement for nedit. I don't care about its eye candy (but it's really nice), but the functionality of Kate is just great! The terminal window and the file browser helps a lot, saves a lot of time. Switching between the opened files is very easy by using Alt+(left/right) Arrows. Last but not least... its integration with KDE is also great (as expected) You can use all the extended features of 'kdeprint' to have great print-outs! Highly Recommended to all of the programmers!!
I like Nedit except it doesn't copy/paste very well. Mousepad is a good replacement for Nedit. But still not as nice as Kedit.
I use Kate for editing websites, not as a Kedit replacement.
When I use Kate, I have a file list, edit pane, and console open. Is there a keyboard shortcut to switch from the edit window to the console, and from the console back to the edit window, or do I always have to use a mouse click to move back and forth?
I know there's a menu item to show and hide the console, but often I need to see output in the console while editing.

Yes. Go to Settings|Configure Shortcuts and set your keyboard shortcut for "Show Terminal". It is a toggle, so hitting it twice will bounce you back and forth between a *nix commandline.
You can also set your shortcut to the Kate commandline, but that's not very useful until the next release when it can be scripted. Still, it's neat to have an emacs style command system in place, even if it is currently limited to a couple dozen commands.
I have tried the toggle (assigned shift+F7) to switch between the konsole pane and the editor pane, and it doesn't switch between the panes, instead, it "closes" the konsole pane.
What I am really looking for is a shortcut to actually "switch between" the panes while leaving the konsole pane open similar to the behavior of F8 for switching between the split editor panes.
It would be incredibly useful to have a shortcut like "alt+uparrow" and "alt+downarrow" to switch between the vertical panes of kate. The behavior of each shortcut could cycle (editor -> konsole -> find -> editor) and at the same time leave up/down to switch immediately between 2 adjacent panes.
Taking your hands from the keyboard to pick up the mouse and click in the window and then reorienting your hands on the keyboard is a bit of a slowdown.
Is there something hidden in the code that would allow this?
I love working with Kate, since it's so easy to use and works great for programming. (I'm self taught, so when I started, I had never heard of an IDE and discovered Kate when I was looking for an editor on Linux.) It gives me everything I need, both the editor and console in one window.
There is one problem I've had with several versions of Kate. Right now I'm using version 3.3.2, but I saw this problem in earlier versions before I recently installed SimpleMEPIS 3.3 on my workstation.
Once I add or change any icons on the tool bar, from then on the changed toolbars, and most other tool bars disappear. Sometimes I'll have a full toolbar show up while editing one file, but it does not show up when I switch files. If the toolbars have disappeared, I only have a minimal set of tool icons (new, open, last doc, next doc, and the reload icon I added). If I go to Settings->Configure Toolbars, then make any change at all, then save the settings, I get all the toolbars back for that one document I'm editing, but not for the others.
At this point, I'd rather not upgrade, due to dependencies and, basically, other than this (and one other problem I'll post separately), everything works, and I don't like over-fixing things.
So what do I need to do to get my toolbars to show up all the time?

She's my favorite replacement for WordPad, better than NotePad, and always comes quickly when called. She has come with all my releases of Fedora, and even though she isn't listed under Programming anymore, I search her out and put an icon in my task bar.
Man, I just love this program so much! it's small and fast, yet it still has any and all of the features that I need, and pretty much none that I don't! please, please kate developers, don't bloat it up or anything... it's perfect the way it is. The only things I find that I don't really like is with the code folding. I'm a php programmer, and any of you who have ever seen php know that it is common practice to begin and end php code like so . The only problem is that the code folding system does not read the short end tag, so when you fold it, it folds the entire rest of the page... If this could be fixed, that would be awsome!

Kate is more of a coding tool... and thus an auto spell checker may not be the best for it. If it is added, I don't think it should be turned on by default.
I do really like Kate though. I just started using it about a week ago. The Highlighting is always nice... but I really love the "embedded terminal" window and the ability to switch between many files with just 2 clicks.
Kate is sleek and lean... but it is built for KDE. I just hope they don't bloat it up like many of the other KDE applications. I like its clean interface and the fact that it doesn't try to be the jack of all trades and offer a million and one different options. I've just been noticing lately that a lot of application developers out there think they have to constantly add new features to their programs. I just hope kate doesn't try to become a KDevelop or a KWord.

automatic spell check would be most useful when it come to writing documents on latex. kile is a kde app that uses kate as its editor component. if this option can be enabled like a plugin or part of kate-plugins, then it would be most useful. there are already a lot of requests of this in bugs.kde.org.
The plans for the future includes allowing the syntax highlight definitions to define which text contexts should be spell checked, which will also allow us to add automatic spell checking without painting your code files all red ;)
For example, in code we could spellcheck only strings and documentation comments. Or for HTML only element text and certain element attributes such as title, summary, alt and similar.
Additionally, it might be possible in the future to use aspell filters directly.

I am a simple user. I am not a programmer. So, I hate kate. I want kedit in return.
I don't hate Kate, but I insist on the return of Kedit. In fact *I* am returning to kde3 partially because of this issue.
IMHO Kate is simply the overall best general/mixed purpose editor available today.

When I click on some files or folders, then they highlights, but not only the active file/folder, but all. Can this feature disable somewhere?
