Description: portageTool is a remake of "emerge Tool". But this app is in an early stage of development. Basicly it's a proof of concept. I also want that installing linux-kde-apps are quite as simple as installing applications in windows.
This release is not for productive use. What I basicly want are comments. -Did you like the installer? -What are your ideas about such kommander apps? ....
Ussage: 1) download the package 2) extract it 3) run it (clicking on the ptool-0.1.run should be enough) 4) follow the instructions
I would love a tool that looked after portage so what do I want from a portage tool.
well...
you have an emerge sync I notice
what of a emerge -uDp world(looks like you would have to include some advanced or default settings)
what would be really cool is some desc/screenshot home page link of all the progs from this
tree obviously would go without saying to browse through the directory
offer to inject a package!
oh oh oh tools you never hear of
"regenworld"
hell while I'm asking backup onto CD of by /etc
links to favorite editor and common gentoo files
purge dist/portage of outdated packages.
I would do much changes or possibly a rewrite of portageTool. But I will do this after Kommander get's some features I need for that (e.g. a treeview).
portageTool is an demonstration for the installer at the moment and that are my main focus now - the installer. If I have a good installer and project structure for kommander apps in general, I will start to make a new full featured portageTool.
I hope you understand that I can't begin in the middle of the development proccess. At first I need some basic things.
Tried the installer, but it didn't install (dump at the bottom).
Other things: the question if I want to run ptool, during the installation should not be there, if you want things as easy as on Windows, that is.
If things should be as easy as under Windows, you might want to make this tool for debs, or rpms. Gentoo is not the easy linux.
For the rest: yes I love it. Something that is needed pretty hard.

No, please don't do it for deb or rpm only. Can you please implement those parts as plugins(all package managment operations), so it can be used for all distro's ? If yes, I maybe will try to write plugin for Slackware then. Plugins system will make your app to be used more widely.
Do you even know what Kommander is? First of all what Sarah has here is two applications, an installer and a Portage tool. Second, the interfaces are visually drawn in the editor and there are just a few lines of bash scripting it... though it could just as easily be Perl, Python, Ruby or any other language.
Kommander is object oriented because it binds text and scripts to widgets. So it tends to be easy to replace parts or build new applications from old ones. They are also easier to write than plugins. Why don't you just grab Kommander and start building it? You can join our user mailing list and share our ideas and scripts to use in your tool. Simple.
The installer and portageTool are 2 different apps.
The installer would be a general tool for installing kommander apps. But there is a lot of work (I need some upcomming kommander features, that are currently in work). This thing will be distro independend.
portageTool is ONLY for gentoo! I will never add any support for other disto, because it makes no sense. If I want to make an easy installer for all distros I wouldn't name it "portageTool"
The icons errors of your output shows that your kde is misconfigured. You should see this warnings always when you start a kde app into a terminal.
The realy error is that no source directory was recognized. Why I have to look.
> Gentoo is not the easy linux.
but installing apps is in no other distri so easy.
>portageTool is ONLY for gentoo! I
> will never add any support for other
You shouldn't. If you provide an API description other people will write the plugins for your app.
> disto, because it makes no sense. If
> I want to make an easy installer for

Yes I understand it. I'm going to write such system for Slackware(If I will do I'll make it as I described - plugins system). That will be basically the same thing, as yours(maybe - I don't know all features you want to include), but other distro. I just hate when two people do the same thing again and again but for different conditions. However, I am novice for Kommander and your app will be a good example and starting point for me, so waiting for new release from you :)
> If things should be as easy as under Windows, you might want to make this tool for debs, or rpms. Gentoo is not the easy linux.
Amazing. Sarah runs Gentoo. Why would you think she would want to develop a tool for a different system? As she pointed out the installer is being build for Kommander and will work on any distribution. Kommander applications don't need to be compiled so I think we are on our way to being easy there.
With all due respects to other distros... RPMs are not easy when you can't find the one you want or are forced to shovel CDs into your system due to dependency hell. Debian is a fine distribution and I use it on the server, but you have to sometimes search our your "unstable" tree just to find a new stable release of desktop software. It's not that easy either. Gentoo is more work to install... but I can update my system by typing "emerge world" in a root console and I never have to shovel CDs in or deal with binary dependency issues. Easy?
People think windows is easy, but they forget about how many times they have to reload a corrupted system, having to keep virus software up to date, trashing an infected system, stability and applications that have notorious bugs as old as 5-6 years that have internet petitions.
Clearly what is easy is a matter of an often distored perspective. It would be nice if you did not go about offering more distored views about a distribution you probably have no experience with. BTW you would be amzed how many people contact me with Quanta questions and identify themselves as newbies running Gentoo. Your Gentoo label doesn't fit.
