Description:
GSTranslator - is a simple translator for Gnome 3.

Translations are provided using several dictionaries/translators like:
- Google Translate (almost all languages are supported, although I tested only a few European languages),
- OneLook Dictionary,
- SJP (Polish Dictionary).

GSTranslator works in two modes:
1. Normal window which acts similarly to other regular translators.
2. In the second mode it uses new notification mechanism introduced to Gnome 3. This is a convenient way to get translations of currently selected text. Notification with translation appears in response to a hotkey calling corresponding event.

This seems great and I would love to use it... but I don't have Gnome3 installed (I use Ubuntu 11.04 with AWN instead of unity), Is there any hope for me to use it with my current setup? if not I will install gnome3 just to use this software = ) Thanks in advance.

It is possible to compile GSTranslator against gtk2, but it will require some changes in code since I've used several functions introduced in gtk3. So I could prepare version for gtk2, but I won't :) The point is GSTranslator uses extensively notifications. Gnome3 handles notifications in a modern way, which actually fits to translator-like apps. I mentioned in changelog that it already works with KDE4, but IMHO notification area in KDE seems to be a bit old-fashioned and impractical. So this is why I'd like people run GSTranslator only on Gnome3. I'm not even sure if it works with Unity. AFAIK Unity is based on gtk2. I've tested GSTranslator under Fedora 15 and Arch.

Wise choice to statically link libkeybinder :) Now adding to the favorites list is done more logically, although deleting from that list still requires adding to the "Hidden" one for the 'deleted' languages to be really removed ;)

I haven't seen you comment before. This time I can't agree with you :) What about the situation when people would like to have some additional languages on lists, but not using them as favorite? It wouldn't be possible with your implementation. In case if someone would like to have listed only favorite languages he/she could use "All" button.

I tried to install Your software, but I failed to have configure finish succesfully "No package 'keybinder-3.0' found" Please let me know part of which project is this dependency

thof

As you can read in README GSTranslator requires keybinder-3.0. It has to be version 3.0 for gtk3! Some distribution didn't prepare new package yet (e.g. Fedora http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=11135 only for gtk2). But you can build/compile this library following instructions https://github.com/engla/keybinder#readme (this is a small library so it shouldn't be a problem). If you are using Arch look at AUR https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=48856

New version (0.3.1) doesn't require libkeybinder anymore.

I'm happy that such applications are starting to be made for Gnome 3. However, there are some bugs in GSTranslator that: (1) Prevent adding of new languages as favorites; and (2) Give these error messages: Gtk-WARNING **: Unknown property: GtkGrid.n-rows Gtk-WARNING **: Unknown property: GtkGrid.n-columns As a temporary workaround for (1), I edited '~/.config/gstranslator/config.xml manually.

First of all, thanks for feedback. 1) This is an old feature and I thought I've tested it enough... Unfortunately I can't reproduce it, though I tried many combination. I need some information from you: - which languages you've tried to add? - bug occurs when: (any output in the console?) a) you select two languages, click "Add" button and nothing happens? b) or click "Add" and languages were added to the list correctly, but when click "Ok" it doesn't save the results to config file? (or maybe app crashes?) - could you upload your config file somewhere? - whether the second list ("Hidden") working properly? You are able to add and delete elements and save result to the file? 2) These are warnings. I'm using Glade in Anjuta and this tool generated ui files. You could edit /usr/share/gstranslator/ui/gstranslator.ui and remove line: <property name="n_rows">5</property> to easily get rid of these messages. Tomorrow, I will try to add some debug messages.

When I add German and English, for example, they are added to the list but when I click on "OK", the application complains about German in this way: Both lists contain at least one the same element. Element "German" needs to be fixed. I also tried Dutch with the same result. I can cancel the addition, close the selection dialog, quit the program, and manually add German-English through the conf file. Then they'll show up after starting the program.

thof

Ok. It is not a bug, it is a feature :) Simply, you can't block ("Hidden") and use as favorite ("Favorite") the same element at the same time. E.g. favorite English to German, so you have to delete English and German from Hidden list. This dialog points which language needs to be deleted from second list: "Element "German" needs to be fixed.". It always happens when specified language will occur on both lists. Because you edited config file manually it is recommended to restore the original config.xml file (delete or rename ~/.config/gstranslator/config.xml). Due to inconsistencies between "Favorite" and "Hidden" lists, it is likely that GSTranslator will crash when you will traverse between favorites.

Although I think that the requirement of editing both an "ad" list and a "hide" list in GUI is somehow unintuitive, that's OK. BTW, with the manual editing, I'd removed German from the 'hide' list when I added it to the 'ad' list. I just though the GUI would do so automatically. However, thanks for mentioning. Keep on developing your good work!

thof

Yes, I agree with you, and I will change that.
