well the kde improvements stuff works great, but you really do need a decent graphics card and xorg to run it smoothly. If you have that stuff it's worth installing then.
As for the xcomposite I did not install the kwin patches, I just use a program, transsit, that allows you the set individual windows transparent. And it is extremely unstable, not for every day us. It looks nice... maybe when they fix the bugs it will be usable
