Description: How about if drives display their free space when mounted via the colour or fill of the icon? I would find this useful as I'm always copying things too and from floppies and CDs. I am no artist or UI guru though so there may be a better way to do this. Just an idea for the clever people who can.
very hard to do. KDE can "gray scale" icons on the fly - just "gray scale" only so much of the icon when you mount the drive. its a very nice idea though it might not be easily understood especially with very light coloring on the icon as in the art concept.
how about simply providing a color bar above, below or to the side of the icon, a-la C&C unit health ?

I don't know how can it done (without drawing several images for every icon) but the idea is G R E A T and will improve usability, not just eyecandy!

My plan was to use multiple icons for different stages just like mounted/unmounted drive icons but a bar underneath would also work ok.
I love your idea and I hope someone will try to make it true. That's what I call useful!
