and

#update-initramfs -u


If usplash doesn't work (black-screen - return to console), in synaptic, delete console-tools.

In /boot/grub/menu.lst line:
Kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6...........
-del "quiet" for text
-add vga=791 for 1024*768
