i'm not agree i use kubuntu even because the WHOLE framework bluetooth is very hard to reproduce in a distro that doesnt' have.. and on kubuntu works perfectely..why cut off this?..;)
I must say, Kubuntu is ugly. Well, not many Linux distros are styleish right out of the box, but Kubuntu is really ugly. The new "upstart" sounds good indeed.
The new Kubuntu is even better than the last. The new installer was a genius idea - you boot the cd like a live CD then install from within the live desktop, so you can surf, blog, whatever while installing :) And of course, adept is as great as ever, and the ubuntu wiki seems to have the answer to almost any question you could think of!
You know, I hadn't thought about the 'surf while you install' aspect, but that's true... That's a great feature. Only used once if you can help it, but very nice.
Bluetooth should be an option, not a default. I had to uninstall the bluetooth stuff Kubuntu forced upon me and get rid of the useless blutooth services on startup. There's nothing wrong with bluetooth, but since everyone doesn't need or use it, why make it a default?
Because most people don't really care about a startup service more or less, but they do care that BT works out of the box. If you care so much about that it's great that you can uninstall it yourself. If you want absolute control about packages, go use Gentoo or something.

What's the situation with KDE 3.5? Will it be available as an update within Breezy or do we have to wait for Dapper Drake? (Issues like this keep me staying with Gentoo, but my mother's new laptop will certainly get the new Kubuntu, which I find is a great thing...)
As i understand it, the kde version is now locked at 3.4.3 for breezy, although minor updates will probably be available. When the dapper drake development process begins the backport repos for breezy will become available, and i assume kde 3.5 will be included there.
Abonded Mandrake without a question when I saw Kubuntu. Forces you to spend a lot of romantic time with the package manager, because most of the base libs/programs (even make and gcc!!) are not provided by the base install (Well, for a package based distribution, I can understand that). But the result worths all the effort. BTW, My 3D card (ATI IGP 340M) works just great!!! I once trashed the kernel trying to compile the driver and never dared to try again, now it works itself. Greaaaat. I guess Kubuntu will surpass Ubuntu one day, KDE is irresistible. Cheers to Kubuntu Team!
Exactly the same for me :) I left Mandake dirctly when I saw Kubuntu and heard some good words about it :) and in mandrake I couldn't get my asus radeon 9600 xt/tvd to work, and now it works spledid :) So no bad words about Kubuntu, it's just GREAT !!!

I have tried many distributions, and this one i like most :) it pretty sucks that rpm is not supported, but all software, libs etc i get from there server, it's great, my desktop looks real good.
There are still lots of problems with this release of the distro, if you are using this release candidate as the final. In fact, it has severe problems with updates, even those from the kubuntu site.
I didn't have any problems installing the Release Candidate, and then using Kynaptic to update everything. I've tried it on 2 machines so far, with no problems. Kubuntu may be lacking a few key utilities that Ubuntu has (update-notify, simpler package manager), but it is a great distro, especially considering this is its first release.
Well, you can use RPMs via 'alien' (look for it in the package manager -Adept Manager or Kynaptic-). But be careful while doing that and don't blame me for any problems :) Good luck.
if you need a root user do the following: sudo passwd root enter your user password, and then it will ask for the root-password u want.
The problem is with integration into kde. In Ubunto the default desktop was gnome. Of course we all complain about how slow it is and the rivalry between the two goes on and on. But, under gnome Ubunto whenever you need to do a task that requires root you are prompted for the password. This is not the case with Kubunto. For some reason it just fails. In the default install you can just open a root terminal and you are asked for a password. In kubunto you are asked for the password but verification fails. As well, when you attempt to sudo you are asked for a password that also seems to fail except that the program that you are executing with sudo appears to continue on. This is somewhat similar to Mac OSX where the root is shielded from the users and you have to take some purposeful steps to get it to allow you to log in as root. Another odd thing is that when you go and boot under the default install (which is gnome) and try to do their kubunto install you are told that you need certain dependencies but when you go to mark those dependencies (using synaptic that is) it tells you the dependencies can't be marked because other dependencies aren't met. When you try to resolve those other dependencies you get nailed with the OS trying to uninstall gnome, heh. I've looked at Ubunto and it look real nice from the standpoint of the average Joe and Jane (Mom and Pop), except that gnome is confusing, limited, and slow and ugly. The features to maintain it aren't there and configuration is a pain.
Last I read on the Kubuntu Wiki page, they know about issues with kdesu to do exactly what you've pointed out. It seems they are working on it ... so stay tuned! This is one project which is going to rock :-)
I tried this out on an old machine. The installation was painless and the desktop has a clean feel to it, but after the installation was complete I realized that I was never asked for a root password. The FAQ on the kubunto homepage tells me to use the default user's password for actions that needed root priviliges, but that didn't work and neither did any of the other more or less obvious options that did come to mind. So I was left with a basically unusable install.
I think there is no root account indeed on Ubuntu (so it must be the same on Kubuntu). Instead you are supposed to using sudo for root operations. This is one of the numerous reasons which made me switch to Debian after 2 painful hours on Ubuntu ;)
I actually think that a sudo enabled system is the best way to work. Secure and still comfortable. You don't have to remember two passwords (comfort) and you can't do admin task directly with your own user, nor a possible malicious program can (secure). Yeah, a malicious program can still prompt you for password and if you are "dumb" like most Joe Average are, you will enter the passwd anyway, but this is another story.
In fact, its a good practice to use sudo. In Kubuntu (or Ubuntu) its as simple as saying: sudo apt-get update rather than su - apt-get update The difference is (at least on Kubuntu) that you have to enter your own password and not the root one. So if my username is scott and password tiger, I would enter tiger when sudo prompts me for a password. The same applies when you run a gui program that requires "root" password.
