I understand your confusion, but you need to just open any GTK app themed with MateriaYaru and you'll see orange as a prevailing color for almost everything meant to highlighted. Same with KDE counterpart. Main highlight color is orange, and only tiny bits of accents are purple by design.
The reason why color scheme has purple instead of orange is my attempt to cheat avoiding making a separate Materia Plasma theme just to make control elements purple instead of orange. This of course made some parts of systemsettings and other apps use wrong selection color (purple), which I wish I could avoid too but to me that's not a big deal - at least not bigger than the previous one (making Plasma use purple control elements).
This is a bit complicated and I'm afraid I'll have to add more complexity with creating separate Plasma themes just to explicitly set necessary colors. This of course means that the purple color you liked so much will be gone from color schemes and replaced with orange as it originally has been planned. Sigh :(
