this causes some gtk apps not to open
I can appreciate the decision but I'm unable to reconcile the similarity to Android. A search and removal of anything named audio from the gently- labeled directories under ~/.local/share seems to be an easy fix.

The audio icon is located within the Plasma "Gently-Color-Plasma". If you don't match this icon, I suggest simply solution: Home (Show Hidden Files) > .local > share > plasma > desktoptheme > Gently-Color-Plasma > icons. Find an audio.svg icon and delete it. Theme will download the default audio icon from "Breeze" theme.
