Description:
A futuristic vectorial theme for dark desktops

Have you ever dreamed about having your computer look like a sci-fi interface? I did.

I tried to develop a clean, monochrome and homogeneous theme with something futuristic to fit in KDE 4 desktops with dark color schemes.
I use this theme in everyday life (at work and at home) trying to extend it as much as possible.

Any help is appreciated.

The DarkFuture complete desktop pack is made of:
DarkFuture icon theme (this one)
DarkFuture color scheme (get it here: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/DarkFuture?content=132559)
DarkFuture desktop theme (give me a couple of weeks)

How to install from Bazaar
If you want to easily update this theme don't use the tar.gz, follow these steps:
1) install bazaar
2) go in your ~/.kde/share/icons folder
3) type:
bzr branch lp:darkfuture DarkFuture

To update it just run:
bzr pull
inside your ~/.kde/share/icons/DarkFuture folder.

Launchpad announcements will be used to advertise updates (together with this page, obviously)
Last changelog:

2010/08/26 First release of the theme (0.1)
2010/09/06 Created a colorizer shell script and added some new icons (available only on launchpad trunk branch)
2011/03/15 Added Chrome, Skype and many other icons. Still working on common icons set
2011/03/28 Added Kalarm and Clementine icons, added some Kmail icons (signatures and encryption) and some mimetypes (trash, shellscript, illustrator)
2014-03-12 Added a lot of new icons. First attempt to replace KDE battery icons (it didn't work)
2014-03-13 Started DarkFuture desktop theme to support tray icons.

Great job dude, this theme completes my current desktop better than I could have imagined. Keep it up!

Hi! I have just uploaded a new Icon Theme called DarkFuturePlus (http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=169292 In esence is your theme but with some more icons. If you like to add these missing icons to yours just see the differences.txt file that is inside the tar.gz. Cheers! P.D.: Great icon theme!!!

I really love these icons and can't imagine using anything else with my oxygen transparent theme in zion reversed colors. There are some KDE tools like system monitor or the tray icons (which I realize are managed separately) that could use your design, but overall this is a comprehensive theme and ties together the dark look well. You're launcher icon is nice, but I actually prefer a different one because I like it to stand out from the other icons. I thought this one juxtaposed nicely next to yours while still fitting with the same general idea: https://v-4-vengeance.deviantart.com/art/Kde-start-137413485.

Does not scale well for a small toolbar height and icon size. Jagged and pixilated appearance. KDE 4.12.3 For example: http://i.imgur.com/WvEGStn.png

C0D

uhm... it should scale: all icons are in svg format. Can you provide a screenshot of an icon theme with circular icons scaling better than DarkFuture? Second question: can you confirm that this "pixelated effect" happens also with filled icons, such as kmail when new mail arrive? It could be that increasing border width could help.

jts74

Yes, nouveKDEgrey scales beautifully. http://i.imgur.com/PVhG6oC.png I do not use kmail.

Ok I'll dig into into and let you know as soon as I have found something ;-)

HiAngel

With such a small screen it's really the dark future :D

I absolutely love the theme!! I have installed it however it differs from the screenshot. The plasma system tray icons, such as kmix and network connections icons have not changed to those in the screenshot. Could someone help me correct this problem?

fuq

I use these icons and really like them. The only bits out of place are the battery indicator and the wireless strength icons. If you get the chance I'd really dig it if you made some pie-chart looking icons. Fantastic job no matter what!

Your icon set impressed me enough to register an account here: thanks for all your work and time! I'm using it together with the Ghost 2 theme collection (plasma, window and color).

aaronlewis1989

could you please add another link for downloading ? Seems i couldn't access that website. Thanks

C0D

Sorry, I'm not sure to understand: did you mean you are not able to download the theme from the download link on this page or through the bzr command as explained in "How to install from Bazaar" section? BTW check if you can access the project page on https://launchpad.net/darkfuture Let me know.

aaronlewis1989

This actually did the job ;-) https://launchpad.net/darkfuture Clicking on Download link on kde-look.org failed to let me access it.

C0D

Maybe this is because I linked the launchpad file directly. While I figure out why this happens you can download the file from launchpad: just click on the big green button on the right column ;-)

Yes. I tried to make this myself, and found adding the glow quite easy. But as you said, KDE doesn't understand filters, so glow doesn't show. Saving icons as images would solve the problem, but that's something I don't want to do, and I do believe that you don't either. Thanks.

C0D

Yeah. We will wait for ksvgtopng to support halos. This is a vectorial theme and I'd like to keep it as is if I can.

giannis12a

Very nice. I like it so much. Will see black on soon? : )

C0D

Why don't you try the colorizer script? Using bazaar you'll be able to download the trunk branch (always in development) where you will find the colorizer script: just put 000000 in it and wait a couple of seconds to have a brand new theme with black icons.

2lmes

i dont know how to interpret can step by step?

C0D

Yes sure. Sorry for this late answer. 1) install the bzr package (for example in debian-based distros "apt-get install bzr") 2) move into your icons folder with cd ~/.kde/share/icons 3) get the latest source bzr co lp:darkfuture DarkFuture 4) move into the theme folder cd DarkFuture 5) run the colorizer script ./colorize.sh Now you'll be prompted for new colors: use the HEX notation without # (for example white=ffffff, black=000000). If you experience problems just ask: I'll try to answer as soon as possible.

ayni

Oh, it's only graphic effect that has to be manually added, unfortunately. It is small, dark outline, that fades away. If you open the picture I linked previosly, and scroll down to the notification area, you can see what I mean by "glow" I don't know if there is, or could be made, a script to do it. I understand, if you cant find time or intrest to do this, it was only an idea. Unfortunately I know nothing about vector craphics, but I could always learn... By the way, I forgot to mention, this iconset of yours looks exellent.

C0D

Thank you. Unfortunately as far as I know the KDE svg support does not allow the use of blur so we cannot have halos. I'll keep your suggestion for the time when it will be supported ;-) Until then you can colorize Dark Future as many times as you wish with the colorizer script. Try it with bright desktops and let me know how it looks, if you like. But remember: its name is Dark Future because it was designed for dark themes... and because future is dark... we all now.

bitcrazy

FYI: Bespin icons are blurred and have halos. m0nk

Hi again :) Unfortunately I can't get the colorizer to work. All it does is copy the folder with new name, and print this: Quote:

ls: cannot access */*.z: No such file or directory Can't open */*.svg: No such file or directory. gzip: */*.svg: No such file or directory
