Can you please show me what to edit to have the colored titlebar in GTK2 apps? Thanks

vincenzocaselli

Well, cannot be sure which style exactly among the following is the right one, but if I edit file ~/.themes/Opendesktop-dark/gtk-3.0/gtk.css, at the following block: headerbar.default-decoration, .csd headerbar.default-decoration, headerbar.default-decoration:backdrop, .csd headerbar.default-decoration:backdrop, .default-decoration.titlebar:not(headerbar), .csd .default-decoration.titlebar:not(headerbar), .default-decoration.titlebar:backdrop:not(headerbar), .csd .default-decoration.titlebar:backdrop:not(headerbar) { and set, for example, background-image: linear-gradient(to top, alpha(shade(#ff0000,1),1),alpha(shade(#ff0000,1),1)); and log out

and log out

and in the session, then I can see that Audacious (GTK2 right?) has a red titlebar. (Tested on Ubuntu 21.04) HTH Vincenzo

Thanks for the update in 2.0.9. The lighter glow border in unfocused windows work when you switch to from another theme to Opendesktop theme. But when you grab the window, move it a bit and switch to another window, the black glow border is back.

vincenzocaselli

I made several trials to fix this behavior, but I cannot find what is adding the black glow. However it seems it goes together with the active-glow, so I tried to reduce/dim both in 2.0.10

Triceratops

I think it's a good compromise you made in 2.0.10. Maybe this is a limitation from the GTK2 engine?

Triceratops

For future releases, can you please `chmod 755 Opendesktop-dark` before creating the archive? (Currently it's 777). Thanks

2.0.8: confirm, after reboot, glow border working on all apps including Bitwarden and Slack. This looks now very good. Also confirm Chrome seems to stand a par with its own border effects. But this is not a big deal. I notice when the window is UN-focused, the glow border is replaced by a quite thick black shadow. Can you make it less black? ie. a bit thinner with a dimmer gray.

Triceratops

You may want to have a look at Solarized Dark by RTL88 https://www.gnome-look.org/p/1308808/ This theme also has a glow border and suffers the same issue than your theme. The glow border only works on true Gnome3 apps. However the author uses a nice trick, he surrounds the border of the window in focus by a thin bright border. And that thing bright border works all all apps!. Pretty useful when you have several dark overlapping windows. Other than that, Solarized Dark is 100% flat. Personally I like better the slightly 3D effects on the headerbar of opendesktop-dark. However I like better the flat dropdown box from Solarized Dark. This is pure personal opinion. Not a critic of the design of opendesktop-dark.

I tried version 2.0.8 on Ubuntu 21.04 and I see the following (I had to logout/login though). Just tell me if you see the same or not. Ok glow border: * Audacity https://i.imgur.com/KiFqKxC.png * Firefox https://i.imgur.com/4vTORCA.png * VS Code https://i.imgur.com/SzL49XG.png * IntelliJ https://i.imgur.com/JF2gD75.png * Bitwarden & Slack: I have conflicts and am not able to install them just now Chrome indeed has the problem * Chrome https://i.imgur.com/KqH2IRl.png

Also with Solarized Dark I see the same problem with Chrome https://i.imgur.com/v9Z7ajS.png

2.0.7 is much better. Thanks for removing transparency and the gradient pane in Gnome Files. Looks very professional now. The glow border seems to work only on genuinely Gnome apps. Others apps are not probably 100% compatible Gnome3 (Firefox, Chrome, VS Code, IntelliJ, Audacious, Slack, Bitwarden) still have a dark shadow instead of the glow border when in focus. But you know what, that doesn't matter. I can perfectly live with this. There is no need for you to waste your time to fix all those little artifact issues, which I suppose most are out of your control. Thanks for putting all the efforts in this theme.

vincenzocaselli

Thank you very much for the feedbacks! Being a little obsessed by detail I will try to go deeper on having the glow border on most app.

9 9 excellent

8 I do like the Grey. In the dark version the navigation bar on the left is not even. There's some strange shine in it.

Triceratops

Not sure if this is a bug: the glow border now exists on all windows, focused or unfocused. Is it intentional? I think it would be better if only the window in focus has the glowing border.

vincenzocaselli

Yes, it's a bug. Fixed in 2.0.1. Let me know if there are still problems in some cases.

Triceratops

In 2.01, the flow border is fixed (ie. only the window in focus has this glow border). However, the jumpy bug is back. Switching to another window make it shaked a bit. Also not all app has that glowing border (VScode, Firefox, Slack, IntelliJ, Ubuntu Updater, Audacious). As I mentioned in my previous message, the 2x version seems to overload too much on graphics effects (3D gradient, transparency, blue outline on drop down, glow around buttons)

vincenzocaselli

In 2.0.5 the jumpy bug when switching to another window should be fixed. Gradients, transparencies, blue outline and buttons glow were removed between 2.0.1 and 2.0.5. Still working on glowing border on all app.

vincenzocaselli

I am on Arch+gnome40 and I cannot find other gtk themes that have glowing borders on all app. Could you point me out some? Tnx

vincenzocaselli

wait.. I think I got it. Try 2.0.6. Any feedback is welcome

Triceratops

Version 2.0.0: POSITIVE: - The brighter glow border is better - Fixed the jumpy window when changing window focus. - WIndow control buttons +-X look nicer NEGATIVE: 1) I think the glow around the topbar buttons are overdone. Sometimes too much of a good thing brings the opposite effects. 2) The thin blue line around border or boxes was better when it was gray. You can compare a setting dialog between GTK2 app (like Audacious) there is no blue line highlight, I find this looks calmer. 3) The 3D gradient on the left pane (Gnome Tweaks, Gnome Files) is probably un-necessary 4) The gray background is slightly transparent (Gnome Tweaks, Gnome Files). Maybe there is an aesthetic purpose, but from my point of view, the transparency is counter productive. I have some troubles to read the content of the window in focus when it mixes with the irrelevant content which is supposed to be hidden in the background.

friartux

This would look awesome IF it weren't that ugly dark grey, and the borders were a bit brighter. Suggestion: make the background dark blue or cyan (hex:- #00xxxx, for example), and the borders a light blue or cyan.

Triceratops

Just saw a theme with a red close button. Look at the version on the right (Cloudy Dark Blue): https://cdn.pling.com/img/8/2/a/9/aaecc74e46a6c276774ff77eb9fb5bd4f177baba304d28c484fbbe0fcd7ab90da67f.png If you think this looks good, can you do the same?
